aluminium roof glazing bars

Roof Glazing from Living Space Doors Ltd

Aluminium Roof Glazing Bars

LSD Ltd. stock a wide variety of patent aluminium roof glazing bars held by our sister company Pennycook Patent Glazing Co. Ltd. Established in 1880 PPG continues to be recognised as a leading designer and supplier of patent glazing systems, offering innovative design solutions to a wide variety of overhead glazing requirements.

Renowned for our high quality, simple to use products, specifically designed for overhead glazing and based on solid Victorian Engineering principles you can be confident that your end product will be truly spectacular and enhance your living space when specifying Pennycook Patent Glazing Co Ltd aluminium roof glazing bars.

Our range of glazing systems are evident in a vast number of prestigious private and public sector projects throughout the country including many bespoke homes where the inclusion of overhead glazing, often in combination with sliding/folding aluminium doors has provided the central focal point for the main living area.

House refurbishments often utilise the spatial advantages of using patent glazing to let light flood into otherwise dark areas, provide the ideal viewing gallery to the great outdoors or provide an indoor / outdoor extension for the keen gardener or just to provide that special place to sit and watch the sun go down.

Our patent glazing is used extensively in many public sector buildings including railway stations, leisure centres, shopping malls, hospitals and offices where it offers a low maintenance, cost effective means of bringing light and interest into a working environment.

Our aluminium roof glazing bars, having evolved over many years of use, have been continually refined to provide simple, efficient and cost effective solutions to your roof glazing requirements.

One such refinement is our patented fixing shoe designed to slide onto the glazing bar. The purpose of this is two-fold.

Firstly it provides a fixing point each side of the bar which removes the need to fix directly through the bar to eliminate any possible points for water penetration through the bar.

Secondly, with the combination of a slotted glass stop designed to lock into the fixing shoe at the base of the bar, expansion and contraction of the building structure is accommodated for independent of the glazing bar. This means that your roof glazing will never come under stress due to movement within the building structure.

Our aluminium roof glazing bars are designed by and specifically extruded for Pennycook Patent Glazing which allows for the design of bespoke bars when necessary to fulfil a particular function and we have utilised this facility on a number of occasions to great effect as we show below.

Aluminium Glazing Bars for Conservatory Roofs

The Princess Diana Conservatory at Kew Gardens is one example where our PL range was used to great effect with the addition of a new extruded weather bar to provide a low profile step detail keeping the sightlines clean and slim line.

The lower dome to the Royal Albert Hall was in serious need of attention and beyond the stage where repair was as option. The contractor, Kelsey Roofing, could not find a glazing bar fit for purpose which would meet the stringent aesthetic requirements of English Heritage until they approached PPG. We designed a bespoke system that adhered to the original design principles but used modern dry glazing methods satisfying both English Heritage and Kelsey Roofing’s site requirements.

We were asked by Henshaw Ltd. to come up with a new glazing bar to replace the existing mix match of aluminium roof glazing bars over the platforms at Waverley Station, Edinburgh. The replacement bar had to provide an economic and non-fragile glazing solution to replace the 34,000mw of glazing whilst still preserving Waverley’s rich heritage. Our solution was to modify our PL range originally used for the platform glazing by extending the glass rebate to provide a non-fragile glazing solution.

We recently provided replacement roof glazing at The National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. Being a grade 2 listed building meant that our traditional non-thermal PL range of aluminium roof glazing bars was the most suitable option, however as an improved thermal performance was required an enhancement to this bar was required. To meet this requirement we developed a thermal snap on GRP cap to fit to the underside of our PL range of aluminium roof glazing bars. This provided the improved thermal performance whilst still keeping the traditional external appearance.

Patent Glazing is the term applied to longitudinal glazing bars generally fixed in a sloped position to provide a self-draining and ventilated system of dry glazing that does not rely entirely for its water tightness upon external glazing seals.

These are either provided as a two edge or a four edge system which describes the number of edges that support the glass infill and we offer both systems as described below.

2 Edge systems:- We offer two ranges patent glazing providing two edge support, our PL non-thermal and our PR thermally improved range. Both ranges are 40mm wide and ideal where an economic slim line system is wanted and the spans are limited to a maximum of 3m.

Both are perfect for use in residential applications with our PR range being the most suitable for indoor applications when the thermal performance is not a major concern. Our PL range is ideal for use in greenhouse type applications and canopies.

Both our PR and PL bars come with a comprehensive set of accessories which are interchangeable between the ranges and form a fully weathered system with no additional seals required.

Our design service is available if drawings are required for approval prior to manufacture and all projects are fully scheduled prior to manufacture to ensure accurate machining of parts.

All parts are fully machined in our Dumbarton factory to suit your specific project so no need for any on-site cutting.

The patent glazing bars and accessories are polyester powder coated to your chosen Ral colour after machining is complete so no exposed uncoated visible edges. Dual colour option is available on request.

We offer the provision of pressed aluminium flashings powder coated to match the glazing bars if required.

Our PL & PR systems are offered as supply only (including glass units and aluminium flashings if required) or as a supply and fit contract if preferred.

The charts below illustrate the available bar types in both ranges with the span capabilities for each bar type shown in single and double glazed options.

4 Edge system:- We offer our RA2000 range of overhead glazing bars and transoms which provide four edge support and are ideal when extended spans and bar centres are required.

Our RA2000 can accommodate spans of up to 4.5m between structural supports and the glazing bars can be spaced up to 1200mm centres apart offering increased flexibility when designing larger areas of overhead glazing.

The range offers 50mm sight lines with an improved thermal performance and advanced EPDM gasket technology.
